Alexithymia

http://oaq.blogspot.com/

Gee... I got a score of 120... it says I show high alexithymic traits -.-

I feel therefore I am?

"The importance of sensory signals in activating the excitatory area is demonstrated by the effect of cutting the brain stem above the point where the fifth cerebral nerves enter the pons. These nerves are the highest nerves entering the brain that transmit significant numbers of somatosensory signals into the brain. When all these input sensory signals are gone, the level of activity in the brain excitatory area diminishes abruptly, and the brain proceeds instantly to a state of greatly reduced activity, approaching a permanent state of coma. But when the brain stem is transected below the fifth nerves, which leaves much input of sensory signals from the facial and oral regions, the coma is averted."
Guyton 11th edition, Elsiever, pg 729

I wonder if you could continue to think with absolutely no sensory input. Then, could you have output by just thinking, in the absence of all input? So much for "cognito ergo sum"

Mac Attack!

I was at some photography workshop organized by MedSoc, and some how we started talking about computers. Somewhere along the conversation someone stared at me and asked, "you don't use a mac?" How strange I thought to myself. Whats so great about macs anyway?

Sure, the latest gen of macbooks have a really nice and colour-accurate LED backlit LCD screen.
They have excellent build quality, excellent packaging, and excellent marketing. Thats about it.

And when I diss mac, macfanatics always go... ohh thats because you haven't used a mac...

Wrong.
My first encounter with mac was the white boxy mac with a CRT screen when I was too young to even know what model of mac it was... but even then, I seemed to prefer the rig with windows 3.11 on it. Over the years since then, I have used apple products now and then, mostly hand-me-downs from my dad who dabbled in mac and decided not to use it. I've tried the original iMac (with the CRT screen), some sort of powerbook, the intel mac mini, ipod classic, iphone (first gen).

I don't hate macs, I do like their hardware, but heres what I dislike:
  1. Price- everything is over priced. For the same specs, you could get a PC for a fraction of the price of a mac... or even a DIY mac... which brings me to my next point
  2. Protectionist & anti-competitive policies - DIY mac eh... thats technically possible, but thats illegal. Why? You aren't allowed to install the Mac OS onto non-Mac hardware. What about bundled software... when Microsoft bundles IE with windows, half the world grumbles and calls it anti-competitive, when Mac bundles another software to its OS, everyone goes... Wow, mac is so great it comes with this and that software that windows doesn't have. When the palm pre managed to sync with itunes, they released a new patch specifically to block it. Thats not nice.
  3. Not adopting open standards - Bonjour is great on its own, but why not follow the DNLA standard?
  4. iphone app store - everything must be reviewed by apple, thats great for keeping out the trash, but not so great when ernest developers are trying to create good products that take forever to approve, or get rejected for no good reason, or are "duplicating functionality" (more like competing with their own products... sounds anti-competitive to me)
  5. mac-vangelists. Yeah. So you bought a mac. I'm happy for you, but don't go around trying to make everyone else use mac. I somehow feel half of what they say is just confirmational bias to make themselves feel better for spending so much money. Then again, I wouldn't mind them standing at a street corner giving out ipods or putting a mac in every hotel room drawer.

Rant #23

The weather is so hot. 35 degrees is ridiculous.

I want to get a new laptop / net book / whatever thingy I can use to take notes and keep organized. Lectures are so messy for this neuro module.

Argh.

OBA dinner yesterday was awesome. Good time spent with friends. A bit quieter this year though, the mood from everyone else was a bit dull. Less familiar teachers there, no items from the older folks. hmm. and $100 is pricey

Welcome to Women's Clinic of Singapore - Commonly Asked Questions

I was reading up about abortion in Singapore while working on this week's ethic's assignment about gender selection. When I came upon this...

Welcome to Women's Clinic of Singapore - Commonly Asked Questions

I feel disturbed reading this guys FAQs.

and this...

"Although, Dr Jen’s background is in O & G, which he has been practicing for more than 25 years, he has also had a special interest in the field of aesthetics for a number of years. His patients are all female and beauty is always uppermost in the female mind."

Besides the bad grammar, it seems to shout "MONEY!"

Travellers

a 20 hour train ride

some travellers are restless. they walk up and down the corridor and explore every corner of the train.

some will try to get to know as many other travellers as possible. friendly? annoying?

some take detours at every stop possible, prolonging the 20 hours to days... months

some just stay in their seats and sleep. eyes open / eyes closed. thats what the train companies expect. the optimal configuration. buy a seat, stay in the seat. if everyone talked and walked, the train would be a mess.

Evil Carpark of Doom

Bad night last friday. The plan was meet at timbre (next to ACM). Went there after watching wall-e with feli, but to the wrong tibre. Genius, 2 timbres and 2 ACMs, and both timbres are next to an ACM. Substation timbre has free parking after 5! The arts house timbre... was crowded, couldn't get parking, circled the place, got lost a little, and finally drove past adelphi, next to the high court. Closed from 1am, that should give me plenty of time, I thought.

Sad irony of life, after parking at adelphi when we were walking towards timbre we found an empty lot, zwooosh, a car went in and parked there. Free of charge. Anyways timbre was crowded, went to Jazz @ southbridge, where I could have parked originally while I was lost. Then time flies, and it was like 2am. And lo and behold, the genius adelphi carpark was shuttered. A bit extreme ain't it. I know its closed, but at least let me out! Some carparks just shutter the entry when its closed, but why the exit too... hmmm its next to the supreme court, can't be many thugs hanging out. So I was forced to take a cab home, and next morning they started charging me per hourly from 6am to the 10am I picked up my car... worked out to be about $12, when I could have parked for free along the road. Gee.

Changed site

Bah, I deleted the google aps account and google pages account within the aps, then made blogger point to the domain, because I can't really be bothered to maintain a proper site. Boohoo.

I realized I haven't been writing a lot lately, and not thinking much, so I should blog and write more, not for you to read, but for me to write, and to think, and be anti-social... boohoo

Boring

"In contrast to other booming Asian cities that teem with noise, dirt and crowds, Singapore is orderly, regimented, well-planned -- and rather boring."

the website

Right now I'm wondering what to do with the domain johnlohmr.com. I used to have a small site with static content and an iframe to this blog, then I removed the blog after a few months, and now I feel like putting it back.

Irritating thing is that I don't have much content to publish anyways. I could just map this blog directly to the domain, but then I wouldn't have other static pages... I guess I don't really need a website yet.

The other irritating thing is that I host my pages thru google pages, and it has many limitations with its own page builder software. I can't edit the CSS or html for the entire page, I only can insert code into a segment of a predefined layout. I can however upload entire html files, but then again if I do so, I can't quick edit the files from google pages. I guess I shouldn't complain because its free after all.

I was thinking of moving to wordpress, which seems like a more powerful tool, but it doesnt support custom domains for free. =\

I'm just ranting... ignore this...

Bored

Im bored at work. Bahhhh...

Palm treos are getting annoying outdated even before they are launched. Silly rumours about a so-called treo 850 which supposed to have integrated wifi... big deal for palm, but every other phone manufacturer had integrated wifi phones like... 2 years ago. Im giving up on palm... stupid technology from the other end of the world tied down by carriers that I dont even use.
